T.W.A.S. (This Week At School...)
Reminder: I still have a number of outstanding Recounts, Math tests and Spelling quizzes that need to be signed and returned. Notes go into their agendas regularly when these items go home. Please ask your child whether they have anything in their agendas to be signed. It ensures that you are informed of your child's progress throughout the term. Thank you kindly for your continued support!
Well, it's been a busy couple of weeks! Congrats to our Nighthawks Flag Football Team who won Areas last week and will compete at the County level next week! We also had a number of top 10 finishes at the Mount St. Louis County Cross-Country meet this past week, including a "Banner" for our Grade 5 Girls which is no easy feat!
In Language, we have finally finished our Joey Pigza read-aloud where students have been focusing on sequencing, visualizing and predicting what would happen next. Students will create a media book cover for it next week. I will also be introducing our new novel study next week where students will now be responsible for some reading of their own. Students are reminded to continue with their home reading program where they are encouraged to log on to Raz-Kids daily.
In math, we are winding down our data management unit. Last week, students developed their own survey question, surveyed their classmates and graphed their results. This week we'll be looking at mean, median and mode. We'll be having our unit test early the following week.
Social Studies:
The Grade 5s have spent considerable time focusing on the Federal Election which took place last week. Our class, as well as Mr. Bridson's, was very excited to participate in our own "mock" election where they voted for the local candidate (using real ballots and polling stations) who represented the party they felt most closely aligned with their individual values. After tallying the ballots, they voted in a minority Liberal Government followed by the Green Party!
The Grade 4s have been working VERY hard on their Province Research Project which was due today. It was a great learning experience and they are excited to present their findings. Presentations will begin Wednesday next week. Remember to practice a few times over the weekend, focusing on good volume, pace and lots of eye contact!
In Science, the Grade 5s presented their Matter Teaching Posters this past week. Next, they will be looking at chemical and physical changes of matter. The Grade 4s will continue with their rocks and minerals. Both units will wrap up in the next few weeks.
In Health, we continue with the importance of nutrients when it comes to healthy eating. The 4s have partnered up and are researching one nutrient in depth and then presenting their findings in a poster format. The 5s have been looking at nutrition labels of packaging to determine the nutritional value of different foods.
In Visual Arts, we have proudly displayed our colourful fall leaves on our portable windows. Today we started a Halloween piece and will paint them black and orange next week.
Finally, we have spent some time with our Study-Buddies in Mrs. Kutcy's class where we assisted them with logging into and reading with them on Raz-Kids, and helped them with their Halloween art this past week.
Important dates next week:
***With the excitement of Halloween and Trick-or-Treat'ing Thursday, there will be no Word Study or Spelling Quiz next week***

Wednesday: Cooperation Character Assembly at 9:30am
