T.W.A.S. (This Week At School...)

Reminder:  Please sign and return ALL spelling quizzes.  I am also still missing some signed Math Place Value tests.  Thank you!

Congratulations to a number of students in our class who did outstanding at the area cross-country meet at Blueberry Trails on Tuesday.  They will now move on to represent Nottawa at the County level in Mount St. Louis!

In Literacy this week, students finished up their Recounts and handed in the final copy on Friday.  This week we will continue with reading strategies and get back to our Joey Pigza read-aloud where we will focus on comprehension and use our previous reading response feedback to improve on our next one.

In Math, we spent a couple of days on Money and began our Data Management unit.  We surveyed our class on their favourite sports and graphed the data results using a bar graph.  This week we continue with interpreting and creating pictograph, circle and broken line graphs.

Science - The Grade 4s used a number of tools to "scratch-test" various rocks and minerals in order to determine the hardness in relation to the "Mohs Scale."  This week we will learn about the rock cycle.  The Grade 5s were given a review sheet to study for the states of matter quiz this week:

They were also given their "States of Matter" teaching poster assignment that is due on Friday:

Social Studies:  The Grade 5s were exposed to the various party "platform promises."  This Friday will be an exciting day as our class will experience a "mock polling station" and will be given the opportunity to vote for the local candidate representing the party they feel aligns with their personal values.  The Grade 4s will be given their Provinces/Territories/Capitals quiz where they will be required to properly label a map of Canada:

They were also given their Political Regions Research assignment that will be due next Friday:

Healthy Eating:  This week we took a look at the all-new Health Canada Food Guide and compared how it was different to the one they are familiar with.  The Grade 5s reviewed the 7 important nutrients needed to grow and be healthy while the 4s focused on exploring the new guide further.

We finished our week by watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving focusing on the main idea or lesson learned.  We also enjoyed some of Charlie's dinner treats:  popcorn, pretzels and jelly beans!

Hoping everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend spending time with family!

   Important dates next week:

Wednesday:  Grade 4 Social Studies quiz
Wednesday:  Grade 5 Science quiz
Friday:  Word Study due and Spelling quiz
Friday:  Grade 5 Science Teaching Poster due
